RĪGAS RITMI 2020
Roberto Fonseca is considered to be the brightest contemporary Cuban pianist on the jazz and world music scene. In Riga, Roberto will be joined by the popular Cuban R&B and rap artist Danay Suarez, who has particpated in his latest album “Yesun”. Roberto Fonseca is a bright Cuban musician, who is not afraid to mix jazz, funk, bossa nova, salsa, mambo, rhumba, flamenco, reggaeton, hip hop and spoken word. His leadership as a musician has also been enhanced by his ability to lead both acoustic piano and different types of keys. He will be visiting Riga on the world tour of his latest album “Yesun”.
Danay Suarez started her musica path at the age of 15, and soon she was noticed on the Havana underground rap scene. French-born UK-based DJ and record label owner Jay Peterson was interested in her music, so he invited Danay to participate in his music selection “Havana Cultura”, where Danaya worked closely with Roberto Fonseca. Her distinctive voice and ability to rap and sing across jazz piano, broken beats or reggae riffs led to Danaya being nominated to four Latin Grammy Awards in 2017, including Best Young Artist of the Year and Album of the year. Suarez is called “Cuba’s female hip hop conscience.”
“Is it necessary for jazz to be “challenging” or “complex” in order to be considered “good”? Pianist Roberto Fonseca blazes few new trails here, despite his blending of styles and influences that some might consider disparate, if not oppositional.” – Magazine “JazzTimes”
